CDI Strategies - Volume 7, Issue 17
The U.S. Veterans Health Administration announced yesterday that it is rolling out system-wide CDI efforts. As one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country with 151 hospitals and 827 community-based outpatient clinics, the move signifies the ever-growing importance of CDI programs in ensuring clinical documentation accuracy.
The release also highlights the value of CDI program implementation in light of the forthcoming change to the ICD-10 code set. “The emphasis on improved clinical documentation lays the groundwork for implementation of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) which requires greater specificity in documentation,” according to the release.
An interdisciplinary team of clinical and administrative expertise dubbed the “CDI Council” will provide oversight and guidance during CDI program implementation to ensure consistency of the query process, and to “ensure quality, integrity, and accuracy of VHA clinical documentation.”
