ACDIS gives back to the Josie King Foundation

CDI Blog - Volume 10, Issue 69

ACDIS is pleased to donate $1,000 of the proceeds from the 10th annual conference bookstore sales to The Josie King Foundation, a non-profit foundation started by Josie’s mother, Sorrel King, who delivered the general session address on Day 1 of the conference.

On February 22, 2001, eighteen-month old Josie King died from medical errors stemming from breakdowns in communication. Josie’s was not an isolated case, however. Every year, 98,000 people die from medical errors. This makes it the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.

At the ACDIS conference, King delivered a powerful, moving message about the importance of communication in preventing medical errors. CDI specialists play a crucial role in the identification and prevention of errors through clarification of provider documentation in the health record.

The Josie King Foundation’s mission is to prevent patients from dying or being harmed by medical errors. By uniting healthcare providers and consumers, and funding innovative safety programs, the foundation hopes to create a culture of patient safety, together.
