Keynote recap: Sorrel King shares Josie’s story and the importance of communication
Day 1 of the 10th annual ACDIS conference kicked off this morning with Sorrel King, the founder of the Josie King Foundation and the best-selling author of Josie’s Story. During the session, King shared the story of her daughter’s death due to medical errors and the importance of communication in the healthcare industry.
“My daughter died due to a breakdown of communication,” King said.
CDI specialists are all too familiar with the problem of lack-luster documentation and communication. One of the primary efforts King’s organization now focuses on is complete documentation from nurses, physicians, and even the patient’s family.
King also touched on the problem of physician engagement with new facility programs and policies. While many CDI programs often rely on data and numbers to prove their point to the medical staff, King encouraged that it often takes more than that data alone to fully bring the providers on-board with new projects.
“Sometimes, it just takes one nurse on the floor with passion for the project,” she said.
If CDI specialists possess one crucial skill, it is passion for accurate documentation for every patient to ensure better patient care.
