Local chapter update: Planning for regular chapter leadership transitions

ACDIS local chapters wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the CDI professionals who volunteer within them. In turn, local chapter leaders have the chance to serve their community, grow their leadership skills, and network and collaborate with others. But serving as a leader also takes a lot of time and energy! For this reason, ACDIS recommends that leaders have a succession plan to ensure they aren’t overloaded and burnt out, and so the chapter can continue on when they step down.

When planning for replacements, consider that three years is probably as long as you should volunteer in a local chapter leadership position. So, if you’ve been in the role for two years, it’s time to start considering your transition plan and mentoring new volunteers so they’re ready to take over effectively in the future. Don’t wait till you’re already exhausted and ready to step back to search for successors!

As you look for chapter members that would be happy and willing to take over your role in the future, ACDIS administration is also happy to help. The online chapter membership roster, for example, asks respondents whether they’d be interested in volunteering. • The California ACDIS chapter meets Friday, October 21, The California ACDIS chapter meets Friday, October 21, for their 6th Annual Live/Virtual Conference at Liberty Station Conference Center. • APDIS, the Pediatric ACDIS networking group, meets Thursday, December 1, 3-4:30 p.m., via webinar.
