News: CDC publishes ICD-10-CM addenda for new vaping code

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published an ICD-10-CM index and tabular addenda with reporting criteria for new ICD-10-CM code U07.0, Vaping-related disorders. The agency also updated its MS-DRG grouper software package to accommodate the new code, reported JustCoding.

Effective April 1, code U07.0 will be added to the ICD-10-CM manual under a new section: Provisional assignment of new diseases of uncertain etiology or emergency use. A note with the section will state, “Codes U00-U49 are to be used by WHO [World Health Organization] for the provisional assignment of new diseases of uncertain etiology.”

Coding information will appear as follows:

• U07.0, vaping-related disorder
  
  • Dabbing-related lung damage
  • Dabbing-related lung injury
  • Electronic cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury [EVALI]
  • Electronic cigarette-related lung damage
  • Electronic cigarette-related lung injury

Coders are instructed to use additional codes to identify manifestations such as:

• Abdominal pain (R10.84)
• Acute respiratory distress syndrome (J80)
• Diarrhea (R19.7)
• Drug-induced interstitial lung disorder (J70.4)
• Lipoid pneumonia (J69.1)
• Weight loss (R63.4)

According to CDC guidance, when U07.0 is reported as a principal diagnosis, the following diagnosis codes will be excluded from acting as an MCC when reported as a secondary diagnosis under the complication or comorbidity exclusions list:

• J67.8, hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to other organic dusts
• J67.9, hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to unspecified organic dust
• J68.0, bronchitis and pneumonitis due to chemicals, gases, fumes and vapors
• J68.1, pulmonary edema due to chemicals, gases, fumes and vapors
• J69.1, pneumonitis due to inhalation of oils and essence
