CDI Strategies - Volume 4, Issue 15
A recent ACDIS survey available to members shows that most CDI programs require specialists to conduct between eight to 12 new reviews per day per staff member and between 12–20 re-reviews daily.
When asked to provide the average number of new (initial) reviews per month per full-time CDI specialist, 25% of respondents answered 101–150, and another 21% replied 151–200 reviews monthly.
Regarding the average number of re-reviews per month per specialist, 24% of respondents said their CDI specialists re-reviewed 101–150 charts on a monthly basis.
A number of factors affect chart review productivity. Factors to consider include the following:
- Other responsibilities in addition to chart review
- Whether a hospital has an electronic health record (EHR)
- Who inputs CDI data
- The day on which CDI specialists first review a record
- The types of patient charts being reviewed
- Query percentage rate
- Age of the program
- Type of facility
- How queries are presented
- Coding and working DRG assignment
