Note from the Advisory Board: Maintain open lines of communication between CDI and coding staff members
By Robin Jones, RN, BSN, MHA/Ed, CCDS
In 2004, when I entered the world of CDI, I can remember sitting in a classroom for one week learning about diagnosis related groups (DRG), complications and comorbid conditions (CC) and major CCs (MCC), case-mix index (CMI), severity of illness (SOI)/risk of mortality (ROM), and a host of other acronyms with medical professionals called coders. Honestly, it wasn’t until I was submerged into the CDI profession that I truly understood the value coders bring to the clinical world.
