News: CMS releases Fact Sheets regarding IPPS, POA, and HAC

The Medicare Learning Network released three fact sheets of interest to CDI staff:

• The “Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC) in Acute Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Hospitals” fact sheet (revised October 2010) is now available in downloadable format at http://www.cms.gov/HospitalAcqCond/downloads/HACFactsheet.pdf.
  This fact sheet provides an overview of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, lists affected hospitals, includes a table of HACs and codes, and the different categories of HAC to help providers learn more about the program.

• The “Present on Admission Indicator Reporting by Acute Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Hospitals” fact sheet (revised October 2010) is also available in downloadable format at http://www.cms.gov/MLNProducts/downloads/wPOAFactSheet.pdf. 
  The fact sheet explains how to apply POA indicators to diagnosis codes for certain healthcare claims and discusses how providers should clarify if the diagnosis was present at the time of admission.

• The revised fact sheet titled “Acute Care Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System” (November 2010) is available as well at http://www.cms.gov/MLNProducts/downloads/AcutePaymtSysfctsht.pdf. 
  The publication provides information about the basis Acute Care Hospital IPPS payments, payment rates, and how payment rates are set.
