Use of claims data could soon expand to a host of new entities under proposed rules released in a CMS statement January 29.
Organizations approved as “qualified entities” could share or sell analyses of Medicare and private sector claims data to providers, employers, and other groups, who would be able to use the data to improve patient care, CMS states. Currently, CDI professionals often look to data reporting from CMS’ own Hospital and Physician Compare for documentation improvement targets while employing other public reporting sites such as Leapfrog Hospital Survey or Healthgrades to illustrate how physician documentation translates in the wider world.
The rule includes privacy and security requirements and CMS says it intends for the data to be used for non-public purposes.
