News: CMS adds central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) to Hospital Compare data reports

Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) result in an estimated $700 million in additional healthcare costs across the nation, with more than 41,000 people affected in 2009, according to a February 7 CMS release. CMS is adding data regarding CLABSI to its Hospital Compare database in an attempt to “hold hospitals accountable for bringing down these rates, saving thousands of lives and millions of dollars each year.”
Under Medicare’s Inpatient Prospective Payment System, hospitals must report CLABSI rates for adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care unit patients to receive a full payment update in fiscal year 2013.
The Hospital Compare website includes public information regarding 4,700 hospitals on measures from mortality and readmission rates, measures that capture patient experience, 17 measures that assess patient safety, 25 process-of-care measures, and three children’s asthma care measures.
