There are 1,974 additions, 311 deletions, and 425 revisions for the 2017 ICD-10-CM code set, according to a statement published by CMS. The resulting total of 71,486 diagnosis codes was released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 24.
Noteworthy changes and updates include the addition of the condition postoperative sermoa, the addition of code A92.4 for the Zika Virus, and numerous revisions to capture additional specificity.
In addition to the Index and Tabular files, CMS included the addenda for the Index, Table of Drugs and Chemicals, Neoplasm Table, and External Cause Index, in addition to the Code Descriptor in Tabular Order and Duplicate Code file. The agency did not release the updated 2017 ICD-10-CM Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines or the information for General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs). Lastly, the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Final Rule will confirm changes or updates in MS-DRGs and value-based purchasing.
The publication of the new diagnosis codes comes just weeks after the release of the 2017 ICD-10-PCS codes, which will see an additional 3,651 procedure codes added for 2017 and 487 revisions, bringing the total number of PCS codes to 75,625. Code changes for both ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS will become effective October 1, 2016.
