Member Insight: A case mix index primer
by Sonja Racke, RN, BSBM, CPC, CRCR
The discussion of case-mix index (CMI) and the role of the CDI specialist continues to be a heated topic. C-suite executives (especially the financial officers) frequently want to point a finger at one group or department and ask why the CMI isn’t higher. Many times, CDI programs become the target of the finger-pointing because CDI specialists can have an immediate, real-time impact on financial reimbursement with their reviews.
To understand CDI’s impact on CMI, and the other factors influencing CMI, a CDI specialist must understand exactly what CMI is, why it is so important, who and what is involved, and how it is calculated.
